How Lucky Can You Get

THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND
MUSIC BY KANDER & EBB
DIRECTED BY MAYME PAUL
FEATURING HAYLEY SCOTT, LAUREN ABEL, JENNY TOTCKY, BENJAMIN WALTON, AND NICK DRIVAS
The students at UCF always do a great job, and this show is no exception. It features the songs of Kander & Ebb, the team responsible for such hit musicals as “Cabaret” and “Chicago.” Over their fifty year career they wrote the songs for 20 shows. Their works fall basically into two categories–humerous and romantic.
“Coffee In A Cardboard Cup,” “Sara Lee” and “Ring Those Bells” have very clever funny lyrics. “Colored Lights” has a lovely melody as does “I Can’t Remember You.” The highlight of the evening was “Round The Rink,” where the cast was actually tap dancing on roller skates.
All five voices blended well together. Hayley had the strongest, and she was quite lively as well. Jenny’s singing came in a close second and it was obvious she had some ballet training. But the best female dancer was Lauren–too bad her voice was so annoying. As for the guys, they were capable but not outstanding. I found out these were lower classmen performing, since the upper classmen were off to summer stock. So they did not have all that much experience under their roller skates; we therefore have to applaud them for their efforts.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable show due to the wonderful songs presented. It highlighted the ups and downs of life in song, my favorite type of theater.
